Adaptive Ballet

Adaptive Dance Program in St. Petersburg, FL
The Adaptive Dance Program at The Academy of Ballet Arts is designed for children with Down Syndrome, Autism, physical, mental, and emotional challenges, as well as those who use wheelchairs. Our goal is to provide a welcoming, inclusive space where every child can experience the joy of movement.
Our Approach
Two of our faculty members attended the Boston Ballet’s Adaptive Ballet Seminar in 2017, shaping our curriculum with movement inspired by ballet, character, modern, music, and theatre. We believe that everyone deserves the chance to express themselves through dance without limitations or judgment.
The Academy of Ballet Arts is wheelchair accessible, and we work closely with families to develop an individualized educational plan for each student. As students gain confidence and demonstrate a basic technical level, they may transition into the mainstream ballet curriculum.

A Legacy of Inclusion
Since 1969, The Academy of Ballet Arts has been committed to making dance accessible to everyone. Our adaptive dance program is deeply rooted in our belief that movement is for all, regardless of physical ability.
In 2018, the Florida Cultural Arts Division awarded The Academy of Ballet Arts with a Diversity and Inclusion Award for our work in adaptive ballet. The program has transformed not only the lives of our students but also the way our community views inclusivity in the arts.
Success Stories
Kaitlyn’s Story
Despite losing muscle function due to polymyositis, Kaitlyn’s love for dance never faded. She became a fully integrated ballet student, participating in The Nutcracker with a specially designed sleigh for her wheelchair. Her legacy continues to inspire our commitment to adaptive dance education.
Marla’s Story
Marla, born with Cerebral Palsy, overcame severe mobility challenges through our program. After Achilles tendon lengthening surgery, she continued to develop strength, confidence, and coordination in ballet class.
Emerson’s Story
Diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, Emerson struggled with emotional regulation. Through dance, she learned self-discipline, formed friendships, and developed artistic goals. She performed in The Nutcracker from ages 8 to 18 and was later accepted into the Savannah School of Art for voice-over and costume design.
